Trump Blames Cohen Hearing for Failure of North Korea Summit

Rogers didn't think the North Korea summit went well for the USA and that Trump made a mistake in his negotiation tactics because he has such a hard stance.

He also said the president acted irresponsibly with regard to North Korea's nuclear arsenal.

Trump said he believed Kim's claim that he did not know what happened to Otto Warmbier, who died at age 22 days after being sent back to the United States in 2017.

Much of the criticism of the summit was sparked by Trump's remarks on the case of an American student tortured and left in a coma in North Korea. US officials have long said the spring exercises, known as Foal Eagle and Key Resolve, would be reduced in scope as the countries embraced smaller-scale drills. While denouncing the activity as "despicable and barbaric", President Trump has not held the leaders directly accountable because, as Bolton notes, the US has "a hard line to walk to negotiate".

"The military drills, or war games as I call them, were never even discussed in my mtg w/ Kim Jong Un", he tweeted.

But Bolton said that Trump's view is that he "gave nothing away".

President Trump walked away from his second summit with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un in Vietnam without a firm agreement in hand, failing to secure a deal to get the North to give up its nuclear program.

"I think that this was a spectacular failure but made all the worse by the president's obsequious comments when it came to the murder of an American citizen, Otto Warmbier", the Democratic lawmaker said. "I am not the national security decision-maker".

Bolton said Kim was willing to make "a very limited concession" to dismantle its Yongbyon nuclear weapons complex in exchange for "substantial" sanctions relief.

The Yongbyon site is "the foundation of North Korean nuclear facilities", he added. "I don't view it as a failure at all when American national interests are protected".

The nuclear reactor that is believed to have supplied much of the plutonium for North Korea's nuclear weapons appears to have been shut down for the past three months, the United Nations atomic watchdog said on Monday, without suggesting why.

The US and North Korea have offered contradictory accounts of why last week's summit in Vietnam broke down, though both pointed to American sanctions as a sticking point.

"I've heard the president talk about Otto Warmbier on any number of occasions in the Oval Office".

Still, Washington and Seoul are committed to keeping an atmosphere of dialogue alive and announced on Sunday that they would be eliminating their massive springtime military drills and replacing them with smaller exercises in what they call an effort to support diplomacy with Pyongyang. "Also, reducing tensions with North Korea at this time is a good thing!"

Asked during an appearance on CNN's "State of the Union" whether he takes Kim at his word, Bolton replied, "My opinion doesn't matter ..."
