André Previn, conductor and Oscar-winning composer, dies at 89

The 10-time Grammy Award victor, who also earned four Oscars throughout his lifetime, died in his Manhattan home on Thursday, the Associated Press reports. Together, they were nominated for two Academy Awards for song "Faraway Part of Town" from Pepe (1960) and "Second Chance" from Two for the Seesaw (1962).

The Recording Academy honored Previn with its Lifetime Achievement Award, a 2010 Special Merit Award, alongside with Leonard Cohen, Michael Jackson, Loretta Lynn and Bobby Darin, among others. He won the first two Oscars, for best scoring of a musical picture, for Gigi and Porgy & Bess in 1958 and 1959.

His career flourished in the late 1950s and early 1960s with musical hits he adapted from the theatrical stage for films and original scores he composed and conducted. Soon-Yi Previn, an adopted daughter of Previn and Farrow, later became Allen's wife.

Tributes poured in Thursday for Andre Previn, the multifaceted artist renowned for his mastery of classical music and jazz, who has died at 89 years old.

He was the jazz virtuoso and legendary conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra who married a string of lovely and talented women.

Farrow spoke out on Previn's death on Twitter writing, "See you in the Morning beloved Friend".

Previn was born Andreas Ludwig Priwin in Berlin, Germany, in 1929 or -30 and came to the United States around 1940, where he became a naturalized citizen in 1943. "May you rest in glorious symphonies".

Previn was married five times; his third wife was actress Mia Farrow and his fifth marriage was to German violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter. After orchestrating the score of My Fair Lady for the big screen, he partnered with Allan Jay Lerner in to write musical Coco, a 1969 musical about fashion designer Coco Chanel starring Katharine Hepburn.

In 1967, Previn was hired as the music director for the Houston Symphony Orchestra.

Farrow and Previn married in 1970, after she had given birth to twins and just weeks after his divorce came through. He had previously written her a violin concerto in 1999, but they did not marry until 2002.
