Washington vaccination rate spikes as measles outbreak continues

If you think you might be infected, the safest thing to do is stay in your room because of the highly contagious nature of the disease. To prevent outbreaks and eliminate measles, countries need to sustain high national and subnational immunization coverage with two doses of measles-containing vaccine, as well as identify and address all pockets of underimmunization among their populations.

This lead to distrust in vaccinations after concerns were made public by the manufacturers regarding its potential side effects.

Canada could experience the same type of measles outbreaks that Washington and NY states are now facing because of low vaccination rates and the highly contagious nature of the virus, public health experts warn.

Some 82,596 people in 47 of 53 countries contracted measles, the highest number this decade and three times the figure in 2017.

"For example in Romania there have been prominent and profiled people in the media speaking against vaccines and that is having a real influence on people's perceptions", Macartney said.

Adult vaccination numbers in the county also rose. Some parents avoid vaccines because of anecdotal "evidence", citing a friend of a friend's child who was diagnosed with autism shortly after their MMR vaccine, or a cousin's child who had a high fever after their first shots. However, there are 11 people who display symptoms of measles and are awaiting the results of blood work to confirm the diagnosis. "The recommended two doses of the measles vaccine provide even greater protection - 97 percent".

The agency said it will continue working to improve vaccination rates.

The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that in order to reach the measles herd immunity threshold and stop the spread, at least 93-95% of the population must be up-to-date on vaccinations.
