The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) said: 'Following extensive visual examination of the accident site using the remotely operated vehicle (ROV), it was made a decision to attempt recovery operations.

Sala, Cardiff's record signing, is feared dead after a plane travelling from Nantes to south Wales lost radar contact near Guernsey on January 21.

"Strong tidal conditions mean we can only use the remotely operated vehicle (ROV) for limited periods each day and this will mean that progress is slow".

It was confirmed on Monday morning that a body - which has yet to be recovered and identified - had been seen in the wreckage of the aircraft which disappeared while carrying the player.

However, due to poor weather conditions the wreckage of the plane has not been recovered and the operation has been brought to a close.

'The body is now being taken to Portland to be passed into the care of the Dorset Coroner, ' a statement read.
