Samsung struck first with its Galaxy Fold model for MWC 2019 but Huawei's Mate X makes it look like a prototype.

In an interview on Sunday, Ji explained that "in the short term this smartphone is important to stimulate the 5G industry and open the door to new collaboration".

While Huawei's phone has a price tag attached, though, the Mate X still doesn't have a specific release date.

Huawei, which became the world's second-biggest smartphone maker past year after Samsung, argued at its MWC launch event that its hardware is technically superior to Samsung's, saying the Mate X's screen is bigger than the Galaxy Fold when unfolded and its device is flatter and thinner than Samsung's when folded shut.

Are Foldable Phones the Future?

We are seeing a lot of progress. It will be one of the primary reasons to hang back and let other people take the financial hit and do the real-world testing to answer these questions.

After Samsung's costly Galaxy Fold was announced at around $2,000, we thought we'd seen the most costly standard configuration of a phone for a while.

Thomas Husson, an analyst at Forrester, said the Mate X "shows Huawei is a leader in tech innovation". While Samsung has opted to include a cut-out in the display of the Galaxy Fold to house the front-facing cameras and the rear-facer in the main body, Huawei has chosen to include these in a vertical bar that helps to free up the screen. The Mate X also only needs three cameras instead of the six you'll find on the Galaxy Fold. What if Samsung and Huawei are completely wrong with their approaches and foldable devices end up becoming a fad much quicker because they were rushed out before they were ready? Peradventure you want to take a selfie, you've got a 6.38-inch display having a resolution of 2480 x 892 pixels serving as a viewfinder.

"Since colorless polyimide, a flexible film used for a foldable smartphone screen, is not as hard as a smartphone screen made of a glass panel, an outward-folding device is more exposed to scratches than in-folding ones", a market watcher said.

Mate X is powered by Huawei's Kirin 980 processor and Balong 5000 modem that allows it to deliver 5G speeds. Another cool thing is that, the person you are capturing can have a live view from the rear screen that is if it is folded. Here, it told eager consumers that the phone will be available in mid-2019 and at the cost of a small second-hand vehicle.

The BBC reports that the Mate X is set to go on sale at a starting price of £1996 ($2,600;) and is due to be released this summer.
