U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and senior North Korean official Kim Yong Chol are expected to meet on Thursday or Friday in the U.S. capital to discuss a second summit between their leaders, CNN and South Korean media reported citing sources familiar with the issue.

News of the impending visit came even as Trump unveiled a revamped USA missile defense strategy that singled out North Korea as an ongoing and "extraordinary threat", seven months after he declared after his first summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un that the threat the country posed had been eliminated.

Seoul's Ministry of National Defense on Wednesday said it had asked Tokyo to reveal the frequency of the radar that it claims to have detected so that the two sides can examine the data together in Singapore on Monday at the latest meeting between generals from both sides.

"The current impasse in denuclearization talks is the product of a U.S. demand that North Korea take specific denuclearization steps, together with the DPRK's (Democratic People's Republic of Korea) insistence that the Singapore agreement is about improving relations and removing the United States threat". North Korea has called the label a provocation that demonstrated Seoul's hostility.

Reports added that Trump had sent a personal letter to the North's leader and that a proposed second Trump-Kim meeting is aimed for next month.

She also said Seoul was not considering restarting a joint factory park and tours to a mountain resort in the North as a possible concession. He called the Trump-Kim dialogue "promising" but stressed that "we still await concrete steps by North Korea to dismantle the nuclear weapons that threaten our people and our allies in the region".

The CNN reporter also said, Kim Yong-chol is not planning to visit the North Korean mission to the United Nations in NY.

But recent comments by Pompeo about conversations with the North have stoked concern that the Trump administration may be eager to reach a quick deal that focuses on the threat to the US and hands the president a diplomatic win in a time of need.

Regardless, if there is any real prospect of a U.S.

Kim Yong Chol last came to the United States in June.

Trump has repeatedly hailed his diplomacy as a triumph, recently saying there would have been "a nice big fat war in Asia" if it were not for him. Instead, it seems, Pompeo's meeting with Kim Yong Chol has only been rescheduled because Kim may be able to meet with Trump as well. Since then, several private analysts have published reports detailing continuing North Korean development of nuclear and missile technology.

South Korea's defense paper cited the summitry and diplomatic efforts saying North Korea agreed to establish a new relations with the USA and also to work toward "complete denuclearization" during the June summit with Trump.
