The president announced that he will postpone the speech until after the government shutdown ends.

Pelosi told Mr. Trump she won't allow a concurrent resolution authorizing his address to come to the floor, after Mr. Trump told her he planned to speak next week as originally invited.

There has been much speculation about the State of the Union ever since Nancy Pelosi purported to withdraw the House's invitation to the president to speak in the speech's traditional home, the House chamber.

Trump said he was planning a "really important speech" and called Pelosi's move a 'great blotch on the country that we all love'.

Speaker Pelosi's reversal is an unprecedented attempt to impede the President of the United States from performing his constitutional duty laid out in Article II to 'give the Congress information of the State of the Union.' .

Then he demanded that any shutdown-ending measure must contain $5.7 billion for the border wall, funding that Democrats oppose.

Earlier in the day, Mr Trump essentially dared her to disinvite him from making the speech, which was set for next Tuesday. He expanded on those sentiments during a subsequent event at the White House, calling the cancellation a "disgrace" and asserting that Pelosi didn't want to hear the truth about the need for better border security.

"There are so many options - including doing it as per your written offer (made during the Shutdown, security is no problem), and my written acceptance", he said.

She added, "Again, I look forward to welcoming you to the House on a mutually agreeable date for this address when government has been opened".

Accordingly, there are no security concerns regarding the State of the Union Address. He also said that the Democratic Party had become "radicalized" and "very risky", and accused Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of being too submissive to Pelosi.

The State of the Union speech has been a prime-time televised live address from the Capitol only since the era of President Lyndon Johnson in the 1960s.

The second includes funds for border security, but does not include the wall.

California Democratic congressman Eric Swalwell tweeted that "As the son of a cop, I deeply respect our law enforcement officers".

Earlier, Kellyanne Conway, top presidential advisor, told reporters at the White House that Pelosi should have taken care of things before inviting Trump for the January 29 State of the Union Address.

The House, now controlled by Democrats, has passed multiple bills that would open government, but the Republican-run Senate is aligned with Trump's push for border wall funding.

"Honestly, the Secret Service and DHS affirmed to the president even before he asked that there are no security concerns and they have since confirmed that publicly to all of you".

On Wednesday House Speaker Nancy Pelosi withdrew an invitation for him to address Congress, saying government services should fully reopen first.

White House officials have been working on a backup plan to have him give the speech somewhere else if Democrats blocked access to the House chamber. "I don't think he wants to - I hope - subject the Presidency to that kind of indignity, or test the right of a separate but coequal branch of government to invite the President as its guest or not".
