With nothing to gain, Tiger Woods was happy to take whatever victory he could find at Torrey Pines.

Rose had six birdies and an eagle on another pristine day along the Pacific Ocean, a big reason why scores have been so low this week on a South course that will host another US Open in two years.

"Got to have these little goals when I'm not in contention to win a tournament", Woods said. "Still something positive to end the week on". But Woods can still finish strong Sunday with a decent round at Torrey Pines, where he's won nine times before. Nick Taylor (72) of Abbotsford, B.C., and Ben Silverman (72) of Thornhill, Ont., were in a group tied for 48th at 5 under.

It was never going to be enough to catch Justin Rose, though Woods believes he got enough out of the week to feel reasonably well about the start of his year. "I was hitting my putts on my lines, I just wasn't reading them right", he said. "Figured a few things out as the week was going along".

'Last year, towards the end of the season, I got really exhausted because I didn't expect to play that much golf at the end and I didn't train for it. My rounds got cleaner, and that's what I want to have happen.

To see how far Woods has come from a year ago at this tournament, when he was making his PGA Tour return after almost a year away due to spinal fusion surgery, Woods hit 31 fairways (compared to 16 last year) and 54 greens in regulation (compared to just 42). "What I need to do this year is very different than what it was last year".

Woods' comments after his round echoed his thoughts of day one as he failed to match the low scoring of many in the field on the easier North Course, although he is safely in for the weekend on four under in his first start of the year.

Woods is expected to take two weeks off before his next tournament. But this is not a course I can go out and just fire at pins. "So that helps a lot".

With birdies on five of his last eight holes - including the final two - Woods looked like he did in winning the season-ending Tour Championship, his first victory since 2013.

Rose led by as many as six strokes, but his second double bogey of the day, at the par-four 14th, trimmed the lead and he closed with a bogey at the par-five 18th, where his second shot from the left rough found the water.
