McCarthy to take year off coaching

The New York Jets' hiring of Adam Gase as their next head coach apparently came with the seal of approval from the franchise quarterback.

Gase, who was sacked by the Dolphins after his third season in Miami netted just seven wins, was considered one of the top coaching candidates despite posting back-to-back losing seasons with the Fins.

Gase has earned his reputation as a coach who works well with quarterbacks, but his offensive philosophies as a head coach often provided curious results.

During his three years with Gase, Manning threw 131 touchdown passes.

The 55-year-old has an overall head coaching record of 125-77-2.

He has served as an assistant coach for the Detroit Lions, San Francisco 49ers, Denver Broncos and Chicago Bears before being hired as the head coach of the Miami Dolphins.

Rhule seemed to be the favorite on Wednesday, but that took a turn just before it was announced that Gase got the job.

The Jets did not have a great 2018 season under Todd Bowles as they went a disappointing 4-12.

The Jets have to hope that, with no time to reflect and reboot, Gase will quickly learn from some of his missteps with Miami, whether it be his reported rifts with some of his players and abrasiveness with the team owner or his combative attitude in press conferences.
