Heavy snow hitting parts of Midwest; risky cold coming

President Donald Trump, noting wind chill temperatures in the "beautiful Midwest" are setting records, said in a tweet Monday evening: "What the hell is going on with Global Warming?"

Already, the deadly cold has resulted in two fatalities in the United States and, with the coldest weather yet to come, experts are advising people to stay aware and prepare.

Between one to two feet of snow was forecast in Wisconsin and six inches in IL. Michigan's governor issued a state of emergency Monday ahead of the risky cold.

There is some debate among scientists about whether polar vortexes have become more frequent and, if so, what effect climate change might be having on them. He noted the record heat now in Australia.

Across the Midwest and Great Lakes, the brutal cold will likely shatter dozens of records, CNN meteorologist Dave Hennen said. The current record of minus 26 degrees was set in 1996. Chicago saw its lowest temperatures at negative 27 in 1985, and we could be in that range on Wednesday.

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey declared a state of emergency for all of her state's counties Monday, well in advance of the brunt of the storm.

Whitmer says the order will help address threats to public health and safety stemming from this week's cold snap, which follows a snowstorm that buried parts of MI and other Midwestern states.
