Kitchens has emerged as a favorite along with Stefanski, who according to several reports is returning to the Browns' facility in Berea, Ohio, for a second interview. He had suffered an aortic dissection caused by an aneurysm in his heart, and had he not been on the practice field when it happened where the team's medical staff could get him the help he needed in time, he might have bled to death.
It's hard to suss out how much of that was due to Kitchens and how much was due to (a) Mayfield coming into his own after reliving Tyrod Taylor in Week 3 and getting his first start in Week 4; and (b) the front office's decision to trade Carlos Hyde, which thrust Chubb into the lineup. This would lead to an assumption that outside of a name that either has no connection to Kitchens or one that wouldn't be recognized, an internal hire could be the most realistic situation for the Browns' offensive coordinator position.
Mayfield completed 68.4 percent of his passes in his final eight games, tossing 18 touchdowns and making the Browns a fun offense in the process.
