The special counsel said in a sentencing memo released on Tuesday night that Trump's national security adviser and the retired U.S. Army lieutenant general participated in 19 interviews with prosecutors and has helped in several criminal investigations.

Though prosecutors withheld specific details of Flynn's cooperation because of ongoing investigations, their filing nonetheless underscores the breadth of how much information Mueller has obtained from people close to Trump as the president increasingly vents his anger at the probe - and those who cooperate with it.

Cohen's lawyers asked the judge in a court filing on Friday not to sentence him to prison.

"Given the defendant's substantial assistance and other considerations set forth below, a sentence at the low end of the guideline range-including a sentence that does not impose a term of incarceration-is appropriate and warranted", the memo reads.

US President Donald Trump's former lawyer Michael Cohen exits Federal Court after entering a guilty plea in Manhattan, New York City, US, November 29, 2018.

Trump has continually railed against the special counsel investigation and Russian Federation has denied interfering into the 2016 election, though Putin admitted at a joint appearance with the USA president this past summer that he had hoped Trump would prevail over Clinton. At the time, the intelligence community was concerned the Russians could blackmail Flynn. Cohen told the Senate Intelligence Committee that discussions about the project with Russian Federation ended in January 2016, prior to the Iowa caucuses, the first contest in the presidential primaries. One knowledgeable source said Flynn's cooperation largely took place immediately following his December 2017 court appearance. "It doesn't suggest to me that they're making a lot of headway on the substance of their investigation which is Russian collusion".

Friends and relatives have said Flynn, who at 2016 campaign rallies led chants of "Lock her up!" about Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, is eager to face the judge and accept his fate following his dramatic guilty plea nearly exactly one year ago.
