Konashenkov said the Syrian air defense forces shot down 14 of the 16 precision-guided bombs dropped by the Israeli jets, while the remaining two hit a Syrian military depot, injuring three Syrian soldiers.

Israel's air force has struck scores of targets it describes as Iranian deployments or arms transfers to Lebanon's Iran-backed Hezbollah movement in the Syrian conflict.

Israel has not confirmed the strikes, but reported that the IDF activated its air defense systems to shoot down a Syrian anti-aircraft missile.

The reported attack near Damascus is the first since US President Donald Trump announced last week that the US would withdraw all of its 2,000 forces in Syria, a move that will leave control of the oil-rich eastern third of Syria up for grabs.

Russia's Foreign Ministry stated following the report that the six Israeli F-16 aircraft that carried out the 1.5-hour long airstrike threatened two unnamed passenger jets, which were landing at airports in Beirut and Damascus.

Israel and Russian Federation have sought to avoid such occurrences since Moscow's military intervention in Syria on behalf of the Assad regime began in 2015.

It added that the Israeli warplanes fired the missiles from Lebanese airspace. It said Syria's air defenses had opened fire on "enemy targets", shooting them down.

Third Canadian detained in China, Canadian media says, citing ministry
The official said Canadian authorities were aware of the detention but gave no details. In this case, official and quasi-official Chinese sources have been clear.

Only two reached their target - a "logistics compound" close to Damascus, where three Syrian soldiers were wounded - while the rest were intercepted, the ministry said. The Israel Defense Forces said there was no damage or injuries from the surface-to-air missile fired from Syria at Israel.

The Hezbollah leaders were on their way to a conference in Iran, according to Newsweek.

In messages sent out to the UN secretary-general and the president of the UN Security Council, the ministry said that the Israeli airstrike wouldn't have been launched if it wasn't for what it called "unlimited" U.S. support for Israel.

Most were intercepted by Syria's air defenses, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.

Israel has acknowledged carrying out hundreds of air strikes in Syria against what it says are Iranian military targets and advanced weapons deliveries to Hezbollah. Israel has repeatedly targeted Hezbollah and Iranian sites in Syria that it considers threats to its own security, but rarely admitted to ordering these attacks.

Russian Federation announced it had delivered the S-300 air defense system to Syria in October.
