Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric has ended the Cristiano Ronaldo-Lionel Messi stranglehold on the Ballon d'Or.

He was huge as Real Madrid won the Champions League and an inspiring captain and midfield force in driving Croatia to the World Cup final.

Mbappe, who will turn 20 later this month, picked up the consolation prize of the Kopa Trophy for the best young player.

"2018 is a dream year for me", Modric said.

The award is aptly named after former French and Real Madrid great Raymond Kopa, and the victor of the award is also selected by former Ballon d'Or winners. "My dream was to play for a big club and win important trophies", said Modric, who received the award from presenter and former France forward David Ginola during a ceremony at the Grand Palais in Paris.

And the Paris Saint-Germain teenager, Griezmann's team-mate in France's Russian Federation 2018 triumph, was more conciliatory.

"When Zidane became Madrid coach in January 2016, he called me to his office one day after training and told me how he saw me as a player and what he expected of me". Hegerberg is a three-time Women's Champions League victor with the French side and scored a tournament-record 15 times last season.

"I want to say thanks to France Football". The suggestion clearly made Hegerberg uncomfortable.

Modric became the first player from Croatia to win the Ballon d'Or, crowning a ideal year for country and club. I didn't really think about it at the time to be honest.
