Fury v Wilder ends in controversial draw

Tyson Fury says "the world knows who the real WBC champion is" after fighting to a controversial draw with title-holder Deontay Wilder in Los Angeles.

Fury won the WBA (super), WBO, IBF, IBO, Ring and lineal versions of the title in November 2015 when he beat Wladimir Klitschko in Düsseldorf. The guy who had me losing the first six rounds, I don't know what he was watching.

"One hundred percent we'll do the rematch". The Englishman made Wilder miss constantly, particularly ducking under Wilder's big right hand with grace. And I just wanna say, Deontay Wilder, he can definitely fight and he's definitely a showman.

Lennox Lewis, former world heavyweight champion, said Fury was the clear victor of the bout, empathising with the "Gypsy King" as he referenced his own fight with Evander Holyfield that ended in a controversial draw back in 1999.

"I'm not going to sit here and complain, and scream robbery or whatever", Fury said.

His bald head had bounced off the canvas after Deontay Wilder, the WBC heavyweight boxing champion, hit Fury in the face with a straight right followed by a left hook in the 12th and final round of their Saturday (NZT Sunday) contest. "I had to get up and show that you can continue, that you can carry on and anything is possible". I'm just a fighter, I'm not the judges.

OK, so who's going to get to work on the Tyson Fury biopic?

"One thing I do know is there wasn't many people who thought I could come here and box like I did", Fury said.

Merkel set for late G20 arrival after ‘serious’ plane troubles
The aircraft lost communications for almost an hour, forcing it to make an emergency landing in Germany's Cologne-Bonn airport. She is unlikely to arrive until Friday evening and it was not immediately clear which meetings would have to be rescheduled.

Israeli police recommend indicting Netanyahu in telecom case
Mr Netanyahu held the government's communications portfolio until a year ago and oversaw regulation in the field. The police also recommended that charges of fraud and breach of trust be brought against Netanyahu and his wife.

"I really thought I had him out of there", Wilder said afterwards. I'm very happy with the fight, but put it this way, if I didn't get knocked down twice in that fight, on one of the judge's scorecards I'd have still lost, so he needs banning from boxing forever because he clearly can't judge.

In the champion's favour were the two knockdowns he managed against the challenger, which nonetheless should have been insufficient in helping him to a draw.

"I would love for it to be my next fight", Wilder said.

Fury's extraordinary Lazarus act however ensured the fight would go to the judges. Fury used his twitchy movement and near-constant feints to disrupt the rhythm of Wilder, whose trademark looping punches rarely found their mark.

The six-foot-nine-inch heavyweight could have been stopped on his back by referee Jack Reiss but Fury thanked him for giving the Manchester-born fighter a chance.

"I hope I did you all proud after almost three years out of the ring", Fury continued.

A win for Wilder would have likely set up a blockbuster world heavyweight unification title bout next year against the 22-0 Briton, a fight the American has long sought.
