He is survived by his five children and 17 grandchildren.

Former United States president George Herbert Walker Bush has passed away at the age of 94. The couple had six children, four sons and two daughters. In recent years, Bush used a motorized scooter or wheelchair for mobility. The former commander-in-chief was treated for pneumonia and was temporarily placed on a ventilator in 2017.

Bush, who served as America's 41st president from 1989 to 1993, during which he led a successful campaign to drive out Saddam Hussein from Kuwait, is considered as one of the most important achievements by him.

The elder Bush, a Republican like his sons, also served as vice president for eight years during Ronald Reagan's two terms as president, before being elected to the White House himself.

Earlier this year, Bush was hospitalized for a blood infection after his wife of 73 years, Barbara Bush died in April. Barbara, 92, suffered from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and congestive heart failure.

Bush, a MA native, joined the U.S. armed forces on his 18th birthday in 1938 and eventually became the youngest naval pilot at the time. Being the youngest pilot in the navy when he began flying, he flew 58 combat missions during World War II and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for bravery in action.

Since exiting the highest office, his love of life and family was never more visible.

Instead of joining his father in banking upon graduation from Yale University, Bush headed to bleak west Texas to break into the rough-and-tumble oil business.

George Bush Sr was visited by former president Barack Obama two days ago, according to the family's spokesman.
