A Nationwide outage reaching from NY to California has been causing headaches since early Thursday morning.

A national telecommunications company was still working Friday to restore service to customers after a lengthy outage that began the day prior affected parts of Arizona. Calls in King, Kitsap, Pierce and Thurston counties were working Friday morning, but call centers and county officials said they can't be sure systems are fully restored, as that depends on CenturyLink.

On Friday afternoon, more than 24 hours after first reporting the outage, CenturyLink's twitter feed said: "While our network is experiencing service disruptions, where CenturyLink is the 911 service provider 911 calls are completing".

CenturyLink expects the service to be restored within hours.

"Once they (the gunfire) stopped and we knew we were both OK, I called 911, and that's when we were getting a busy signal", the woman, Kati, told KIRO-TV.

That's what residents across some cities and states were asking late Thursday night when the emergency phone number 911 went down due to a nationwide CenturyLink internet outage.

Investigation: Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai said Friday that the agency's staff will investigate the matter, according to The Washington Post. Pai called the outage "particularly troubling" in a statement.

The outage also did not affect text-to-911 in all areas where that feature is available.

In addition to disrupting 911 services, the CenturyLink outage also caused outages of Verizon network services in at least two states, New Mexico and Montana. Whether you're in a vehicle crash, a burning building, or facing a serious medical problem, the last thing you want to hear when you dial "911" is a busy signal.

Monroe, Louisiana-based CenturyLink didn't provide details of the problem and it didn't indicate how many customers were affected.
