Fellaini late show secures last 16 place for faltering United

Jose Mourinho's tenure at Manchester United continues in its odd fashion as Marouane Fellaini netted late to see his side beat Young Boys in the Champions League.

"They had moments of good football, hypothetical lovely goals, but then also moments of pressure, a lack of confidence that frustrated us".

"The season I was not in the Champions League, I won the Europa League".

'For the style of football I'd rather play for Pep or Klopp because it's exciting, on the front foot, attacking football that allows people to express themselves.

Never one of my teams stayed in the group phase. I wasn't angry with the players, I was frustrated not to score before.

Mourinho refused to address the criticism after the game but match-winner Fellaini admitted that after five wins from their last 13 games they have to take it on the chin.

Victory meant United head to Valencia next month with progress assured, but Tuesday's performance raises more questions than answers given their tepid response to Saturday's goalless draw with struggling Crystal Palace.

"But it is still very hard to score".

"The most important thing is to qualify and for some of my lovers, and those that like stats, I am 14 seasons in the Champions League and 14 times my teams have qualified through to the group stages", Mourinho told BT Sport.

A late goal against Young Boys helps, but it doesn't convince those who think United have serious problems that all is well. Rashford certainly did not have his best game but there was no need from this reaction from his manager, a reaction that certainly will not have helped the young forward.

It is not just critics that irritate Mourinho but questions, too, having raised eyebrows before the game by dropping Romelu Lukaku and Paul Pogba to the bench, with Alexis Sanchez missing out entirely. "If you can not deal with that, that's a big problem". "Tonight, you had Marcus Rashford playing as a nine - that's what you want, that's what you ask for all the time and you had".
