Donald Trump's former campaign chairman Paul Manafort lied to the special counsel investigating Russia's interference in the 2016 US presidential election, breaching his plea agreement, according to a court filing on Monday.
In the same joint status report filing, Manafort's legal team pushed back against the government's assertion.
Manafort, though he has not made public statements since then, was thought to be the star cooperator in the special counsel's ongoing probe into Russian interference in the 2016 United States presidential election and possible coordination with the Trump campaign.
Manafort pleaded guilty to conspiracy and witness tampering on September 14, nearly a year after he was first charged and following his conviction by a jury in a separate but related case on eight tax and banking crimes.
Before the plea, Manafort's defenders had long insisted that he would not cooperate with Mueller and that he does not have information that would incriminate the president. The president's first national security adviser, Michael Flynn, entered into a plea deal with Mueller, while Trump's longtime personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, has been providing information to Mueller's team and federal prosecutors in NY, among others, a person familiar with the matter has said.
Mueller continued on to recommend that Manafort be sentenced for the crimes that he admitted to in the plea deal.

Trade Rumors Washington Wizards Wall and Beal
The team may be listening to offers for everyone on the team, including Beal and John Wall , according to Wojnarowski. At some point, the Wizards' brass has to consider blowing this roster up and embarking on a complete rebuild.
Through his attorneys, Manafort denied lying, saying he "believes he provided truthful information" during a series of sessions with Mueller's investigators.
Deadlocked charges from the previous trial were to be dismissed if there was "successful co-operation" with the special counsel.
Both sides asked Jackson to sentence Manafort without delay.
The charges only relate to Manafort's political consulting with pro-Russian politicians in Ukraine, largely pre-dating his role with the Trump campaign. Manafort remains jailed and is expected to face at least 10 years in prison.
President Donald Trump has denied he knew about the meeting ahead of time and repeatedly called Mueller's investigation a 'witch hunt'.
As part of his plea agreement, Manafort also agreed to forfeit five properties he owned in NY, including his apartment at Trump Tower and his sprawling estate in the Hamptons.
That gathering at Trump Tower had become a central focus of Mueller's look into what role Russian played in the 2016 presidential election.
