Blinded by extreme partisanship, hungry for power and obsessed with tax cuts and environmental and financial deregulation, the Republicans have permitted Trump to recklessly exercise executive power - such as instituting tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum under the bogus guise of protecting USA national security - contrary to their own party's policies and the interests of the citizens they represent.

Leaders are clear about what's not on the agenda: impeachment of Trump - at least until the outcome of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's probe of Russian meddling in the 2016 US elections and possible Trump campaign collusion with Moscow.

But Congress is now out of session as lawmakers campaign for the November 6 election. Few congressional aides and leaders will speak openly about the Democrats' investigative agenda.
