Jordan is heavily reliant on imports and foreign aid, much of which used to pass through Syria.

The crossing's closure in 2015 cut a transit route for hundreds of trucks a day transporting goods between Turkey and the Gulf, and Lebanon and the Gulf, in multi-billion dollar annual trade.

Jordanian taxi driver Imad Sariheen called the reopening of Jaber a source of "great happiness for all of us" which will help ease "economic hardships" caused by the closure of the crossing.

"The opening of the two land crossings... come as a message that the geographical and political map is changing", he said.

The ministry also called for ending the "aggressive" and "illegitimate" presence of the US forces in Syria, said state news agency SANA.

Syrian students from Golan Heights had used this crossing ahead of the Syrian crisis to study in Syria as the government has provided them with exceptional facilitations to seek education in their motherland.

In July, the Iraqi forces worked to enhance the security situation on the border with Syria, installing cameras and flying drones to ensure the security against any threat from IS.

The area in Syria's Deir el-Zour province has been witnessing days of intense clashes between IS and SDF fighters amid bad weather and low visibility.
