More than 20 injured as escalator 'collapses' at metro station

An escalator in a Rome metro station packed with CSKA Moscow football fans broke on Tuesday (Oct 23), injuring at least 20 people as they were flung down the stairs, Italian police said.

Video footage on social media showed the escalator accelerate and send passengers crushing into each other at the bottom, some throwing themselves across to another escalator, which was moving at a normal speed.

Fire brigade spokesman Luca Cari said that the cause of the accident is still being investigated and that one person was seriously injured.

People on the parallel escalator were seen trying to help others clamber across the divide to safety.
