The film still has 46 markets yet to open in including France next weekend followed by Australia, Brazil, Italy, Germany and Spain the following weekend and South Korea on October 31.

Additionally, Halloween managed to push out the latest comic-book movie out of the number one spot, Venom, starring The Revenant alum, Tom Hardy, who has been making waves in Hollywood for the past few years.

"Halloween" made a killing in North America, earning $77.5 million when the slasher film launched in 3,928 locations. It is also the biggest installment from the franchise and the second-biggest debut for a R-rated horror feature behind September 2017's "It", according to Box Office Mojo. Jamie Lee Curtis returns as Laurie Strode as does Nick Castle as Michael "The Shape" Myers.

"You take the nostalgia for 'Halloween, ' especially with the return of Jamie Lee Curtis, and you combine that with the Blumhouse brand and its contemporary currency in the genre and it just made for a ridiculously potent combination at the box office this weekend", said Jim Orr, Universal's president of domestic distribution.

Internationally, Halloween brought in an estimated $14.3 million from 23 markets, with Mexico leading the way with a chart-topping $4.9 million opening followed by the U.K. & Ireland ($3.6m), Russian Federation ($1.79m) and Indonesia ($1.09m). In fact, until this weekend, Jamie Lee Curtis' biggest opening weekend was $29 million for Beverly Hills Chihuahua.

October has never been a particularly strong box office month, but 2018 has helped to change that.

Fox's The Hate U Give expanded nationwide this weekend after two weeks in limited release, rising to sixth place this weekend for $7.5 million. Overseas, Halloween will collect an estimated $14.3 million this weekend. Meanwhile "A Star Is Born" held on to the second place spot for its third weekend with $19.3 million. That easily beat the old record for a slasher movie, set in 2009 by a reboot of the "Friday the 13th" series, and keeps the industry on a record path for October. Rounding out the top five is Universal's "First Man", which notched $8.5 million this weekend for a total of $30 million.
