On Twitter, the president threatened to "terminate NAFTA entirely" if Congress balks at ratifying a revamped NAFTA that could go forward without Canada's involvement if ongoing negotiations fail.

"There is no political necessity to keep Canada in the new NAFTA deal", the president wrote on Twitter.

"We know that a win-win-win agreement is within reach and that's what we're working towards", Freeland said.

In Charlotte, Trump added that if the USA does not reach a deal with Canada, "that's just fine", offering a variation of one of the lines leaked to the Toronto Star paper: "I say affectionately, we'll just have to tariff those cars coming in, that's a lot of money coming into the coffers of the United States".

Trump tweeted that the USA was "far better off before Nafta - should never have been signed".
