Over the course of the interview the men discussed a variety of topics including: the future of humanity and artificial intelligence, Tesla, SpaceX, Musk's controversial merchandising decision to produce 20,0000 flamethrowers at $500 a pop, human kindness and love. He is not only chief executive of the 15-year-old company but also its chairman and largest shareholder.

As a result of the departures and blunt hitting, Tesla's stock is tanking, but at least the segment produced some fun memes.

"So is that a joint?"

"We decided to make it real and dig a tunnel under LA and then other people asked us to build tunnels, so we said yes", he said.

"I'm not a regular smoker of weed", Musk said on the podcast, which is streamed live.

"Assuming that the South African-born businessman would not accept, the podcast host asked: "'You probably can't do this because of stockholders, right?"

"I mean, it's legal, right?" replied Musk. Musk said. "Totally legal", Rogan said.

Shortly after smoking, Musk - dressed in a black T-shirt that says "Occupy Mars" - looks at his phone and laughs, telling Rogan he is getting texts from friends asking why he's smoking weed during the interview.

Tesla reached that level in late June, but did so by working around the clock and hastily adding a third assembly line in a enormous tent outside its factory in Fremont, California - a measure that auto-manufacturing experts had never seen before. "I don't think they would like it very much".

The aura of weed has surrounded Musk before. CEO Elon Musk devised and then quickly canceled a plan to take the company private.

Late Friday, replacements were named for Toledano and O'Brien, and Musk also promoted Vice-President Jerome Guillen to president for automotive, overseeing all auto operations including the parts supply chain.

The Tesla's chief accounting officer, Dave Morton, resigned Tuesday after only a month on the job.

The chief executive abandoned that effort 17 days later, and in the process drew a subpoena from the Securities and Exchange Commission and a series of lawsuits alleging market manipulation. Morton, who joined Tesla on August 6, was quoted in a company filing on Friday saying he believes "strongly" in Tesla and that he had no disagreements with the company's leadership or its financial reporting.

The circumstances surrounding the go-private, no-go-private episode have reportedly drawn heightened scrutiny from SEC investigators.

"As many of you know, Tesla's Chief People Officer Gaby Toledano has been on leave for a few months to spend more time with her family and has chose to continue doing so for personal reasons", Musk added.

Since Mr Musk announced his plan to delist Tesla, its share price has dropped by 20%. Earlier this week, Tesla and Musk got a jolt of good news in the form of positive sales numbers reported by InsideEVs.com for August.
