Luka Modric picked up the award for The Best men's player in the world after helping Real Madrid to their third Champions League title in a row and also guiding Croatia to the World Cup final in Russian Federation before eventually falling to France in the decider.

The midfielder led his national team to their first ever World Cup final in Russian Federation this year but lost 4-2 to eventual winners France in July.

The Croatian central midfielder recieved The Best award on Monday, taking the position from former Real Madrid team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo, who decided not to come to the gala after finding out he would not win.

Liverpool midfielder James Milner couldn't resist the temptation to poke fun at the freakish decision and posted a tongue-in-cheek message on social media, suggesting his goal was not even his best one from a memorable last season.

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are among the judges for a new award created to recognise the world's best young player.

Numerous arguments revolved around Mohamed Salah.

"At this particular moment, I would like to mention my footballing idol and captain of Croatia generation 1998 and their first participation (at the World Cup finals as Croatia) and bronze in France", Modric said.

Salah topped a vote on the Federation Internationale de Football Association website for his moment of individual brilliance against Liverpool's Merseyside rivals, when he picked the ball up on the edge of the Everton box before shrugging off his marker and curling the ball into the top corner.

The goal, which received 38% of fan voting, took place on a snowy December night, where Salah swerved past two defenders and shot past a third to put his team ahead.

The goal beat Ronaldo's (vs Juventus) and Gareth Bale's (vs Liverpool) spectacular overhead kicks in the Champions League.

"I would like to thank those who voted for me".
