Biden, 75, credited McCain with reflecting core values, sometimes frayed in the growing rancor of the nation's politics, that everyday Americans wanted to believe about themselves.

Mr McCain's body will spend Friday lying in Washington the US Capital building. They set the casket atop President Abraham Lincoln's catafalque, a wooden structure that has been used for decades for such services. McCain's Senate colleagues shared memories of McCain's six terms in the Senate.

McConnell, a man who at times fought on the opposite side of McCain on issues such as campaign finance, remembered him on the Senate floor earlier this week as a tough political opponent.

"He is an American hero and so an American flag is fitting", Max Fose said as he walked Central Avenue with flags tucked under his arms. "It was this approach to humanity that made Senator John McCain so respected by countless people around the world, including me".

Ducey said John McCain was about more than politics, he "brought us above politics". That senator was John McCain, and the two instantly grew close. Not invited to speak: Sarah Palin, McCain's vice presidential pick in 2008, or President Trump.

McCain's family asked before his death that President Donald Trump, who the senator had long feuded with, not attend his funeral services. "To him, he knew we all make America great". "They knew that John believed so deeply and so passionately in the soul of America that it made it easier for them to have confidence and faith in America", Biden said.

"I know how hard it is to bury a child, Mrs. McCain", he continued, addressing John's 106-year-old mother, Roberta McCain.

Microsoft Introduces Xbox All Access Subscription
You can also cancel the plan at any time, at which point you'll simply have to pay the remaining price of the hardware. On the face of it, $35 a month for a complete Xbox setup with access to hundreds of games sounds like a good deal.

Pelosi and New York Rep. Joe Crowley escorted 87-year-old Republican Rep. Sam Johnson to McCain's casket.

A short time after arriving at the capitol, the procession moved forward.

Also expected to attend were two dozen sitting USA senators, Arizona Governor Doug Ducey and his wife, Angela; former Vice President Dan Quayle; and several former senators. Graham sat in his own chair.

A powerful Republican voice, McCain was also known as a politician who was unafraid to vote on principle instead of along party lines.

Former Vice President Joe Biden delivered an emotional tribute to his fallen friend, wiping tears from his eyes as he recalled a man who "could not stand the abuse of power wherever he saw it, in whatever form, in whatever country".

"Let us go now from this place in peace and comforting one another in the sure knowledge that one day we will join John in his home in Heaven", Father Reese said. He's only the third person to get such an honor in the state of Arizona in the past 40 years. "I was honored to be a United States senator", Biden said. "We both lamented watching it change", he said.

Family members watched in silence as uniformed military members removed the senator's flag-draped casket from the black hearse and carried it into the North Phoenix Baptist for a commemoration featuring Vice President Joe Biden and other dignitaries.

He died last Saturday of brain cancer and was 81.
