In a report released Friday morning, Chicago Sun-Times reporter Joe Cowley stated that sources close to Jimmy Butler's camp think that "ownership mouthpieces" have "manufactured" rumors that Butler's number one concern in demanding a trade was money.

The growing disconnect between Minnesota's ownership and front office has created an impression for opposing teams that a showdown between Taylor and Tom Thibodeau, the Wolves' president of basketball operations and head coach, looms as an increasingly plausible conclusion to Butler's trade request.

Rather than sit by and wait for calls to come in, Taylor reportedly wants Layden to reach out to teams and initiate trade discussions.

He most prefers the Clippers.

In 59 games for the Timberwolves last season, Butler averaged 22.2 points per game on 47.4 per cent shooting. In fact, according to ESPN's Zach Lowe, certain members of the Wolves organization would like to trade Butler before Monday's media day in order to avoid "a circus".

But other, more calculated, rumors are that Irving wants to team up with Butler and both players want to sign with a team together in free agency next summer.

It appears the same can't be said about Butler, at least in Minnesota.

As well as handing in his trade request, the four-time All-Star has stated three teams he would be willing to sign a contract extension with should he be traded there.

The Lakers signed LeBron James in the summer and now have the cap space available to sign a max-contract salary star next year.

In Minnesota, he had issues with Andrew Wiggins and Karl-Anthony Towns and just seems to be a negative influence on guys.

Butler will join a free-agent class that could include Leonard, Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, Klay Thompson, DeMarcus Cousins, DeAndre Jordan and Kemba Walker.

A person familiar with the talks has told AP that the Timberwolves have had some conversations with clubs, talks that were originally described as the team gauging what the trade market might be for Butler.
