Indians acquire Blue Jays star Donaldson

The deal reunites Donaldson with his former Blue Jays teammate Edwin Encarnacion, who signed with the Indians as a free agent during the 2017 off-season.

From a financial standpoint, it's a low-risk maneuver for the Indians.

A player to be named later is the epitome of an unknown return, which isn't terribly inspiring given what the marketplace would have yielded for Donaldson before the season. Just very bad timing. The injuries have probably already cost Donaldson tens of millions of dollars.

Donaldson enjoyed a third straight all-star season in 2016.

The Indians don't quite know, however, when Donaldson will knock off the rust, round into form and contribute to the big-league club.

However, the Blue Jays front office determined that they were going to aim for a competitive season in 2018 and they obviously missed the mark, not least of all because Donaldson hasn't been able to stay healthy this year, limited to just 36 games as he deals with a calf injury. He has been out since May 28 with a calf injury.

Coincidentally, the Blue Jays and Indians face off during a four-game set at Rogers Centre beginning next Thursday, September 6th.

It was a good run while it lasted, eh, Blue Jays fans? It should be noted that this trade came before MLB's August 31 waiver trade deadline that enables players that are moved prior to midnight to be eligible for their respective team's postseason roster.

Blue Jays pitcher Aaron Sanchez was a 23-year-old sophomore during that milestone campaign.

Donaldson also shone during both playoff runs.

Donaldson becomes the first MVP to wear an Indians uniform since Juan Gonzalez (a two-time victor for the Texas Rangers) spent a year with the club in 2001. He was drafted by the Chicago Cubs as a supplemental first-round pick in 2007. He finished fourth in AL MVP voting after hitting.301 with 24 homers and 93 RBIs.

The danger in this scenario is that Donaldson would accept the offer which is not something the Blue Jays reportedly would like to happen.
