A Category 4 on the five-level Saffir-Simpson hurricane wind scale, Florence was 525 miles south-southeast of Bermuda and the center of the hurricane was forecast to pass between Bermuda and the Bahamas on Tuesday and Wednesday, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said in its 5:00 pm (2100 GMT) advisory. It is expected to remain an extremely unsafe hurricane through Thursday as it approaches the coast of the Carolinas.

Florence's max sustained winds have been clocked at 130 miles per hour with an further increase expected on Monday. States of emergency have been declared in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia, due to fears over the weather conditions the storm will bring. Even in areas far from the coast, he added, parts of North Carolina and Virginia could see rain totals of 10-15 inches over the next seven days.
