Cosby trial was racist and sexist, comedian's defenders cry

Bill Cosby was sentenced Tuesday to three to ten years in state prison by a Pennsylvania judge, who had designated the comedian a "sexually violent predator".

But only one case - that involving Constand, a former Temple University employee turned massage therapist - was recent enough to be prosecuted.

After much debate yesterday, both the defense and prosecution came to an agreement that Cosby would only face a maximum of ten years by merging all three felony counts into one for the sake of a swift sentencing. The time has come.

Former model Janice Dickinson, who accused Cosby of violating her, looked at him in the courtroom and said: "Here's the last laugh, pal".

Ebonee Benson, another of Cosby's publicists, read a statement from Camille Cosby, Cosby's wife, who was notably missing from the sentencing hearing. Sheriff's deputies escorted Cosby out of the courtroom as he clutched a wooden cane with both hands. He says the comedian's lawyers wouldn't let him discuss certain matters, including the sexual assault that led to his conviction or his admission that he gave quaaludes to women before sex.

Cosby had been convicted in an April retrial.

Yesterday, Judge Steven O'Neill Cosby also categorised Cosby as a sexually violent predator, which means he will be on the sex offenders list and undergo counselling for the rest of his life.

But only one case had not surpassed the statute of limitations: the alleged assault of Andrea Constand. His name will appear on a sex-offender registry sent to neighbors, schools and victims. She wrote, "Bill Cosby took my lovely, healthy young spirit and crushed it".

Cosby's defence is pushing instead for house arrest. Cosby claimed the encounter was consensual, and his lawyers branded her a "con artist" who framed the comedian to get a big payday - a $3.4 million settlement she received over a decade ago.

"Bill Cosby took my lovely, healthy young spirit and crushed it", she wrote.
