The 44-year-old Boston city councillor beat House veteran Michael Capuano to secure the Democratic nomination.

Ms Pressley argued she would bring new energy and awareness of the needs in the state's only congressional district where a majority of residents are not white.

Pressley is backed by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the leftist socialist who defeated Crowley in NY on a message of pushing to "Abolish ICE".

Pressley won the Democratic nomination for Massachusetts' 7th Congressional District, defeating Democratic Rep. Mike Capuano to become the first African-American woman in this position in the history of MA.

They moved to Brooklyn, and Pressley attended Boston University from 1992 to 1994, but left school to work full time at a hotel to support her mother.

In a speech after her win, Ms Pressley said: "Change is coming and the future belongs to all of us". Her victory comes just two months after Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez similarly defeated a top House leader in a primary for a NY congressional seat.

However, unlike Crowley, Capuano had fiercely contested the MA race by racking up endorsements, attending debates and highlighting his consistently liberal voting record in one of the most Democratic districts in a traditionally Democratic state.
