The incumbent, who has held the seat for nearly 30 years, had a heavy financial advantage, raising $2.5 million through August 15 to Amatul-Wadud's $113,000.

The last time an incumbent Democratic House member lost a primary was in 2014, when Seth Moulton defeated former Rep. John Tierney, who brought significant personal baggage to the campaign. How closely existing Democratic leaders will take note is yet to be determined.

Rep. Stephen F. Lynch easily won his Democratic primary Tuesday in his bid for a ninth full term.
