Trump's in-laws get US citizenship under programme he denounced

In a phone call after the ceremony, Wildes described the process by which the US First Lady's parents had become US citizens.

First lady Melania Trump's Slovenian-born parents were sworn-in as USA citizens Thursday, benefiting from a path to citizenship known as family-based immigration that the president and others have derisively dubbed "chain migration".

President Donald Trump's in-laws, Viktor and Amalija Knavs, took their oaths of citizenship in New York City.

"It stands for a bedrock of our immigration process when it comes to family reunification", he added to The Times.

Their attorney, Michael Wildes, called the couple "beautiful people" and took a moment to draw attention to the process of legal immigration. "Some people come in, and they bring their whole family with them, who can be truly evil".

Under immigration statutes, the Knavses would have needed to have their green cards for at least five years to apply for citizenship, along with fulfilling character, residency and civic knowledge requirements.

The AP writes that arriving at the ceremony, the Knavses "slipped in and out of a side entrance at a Manhattan federal building flanked by Department of Homeland Security police".

"They have travelled a wonderful journey like many have, like millions have", said lawyer Michael Wildes. The Slovenian immigrants, a former vehicle dealer and textile factory worker, had been living in the United States as permanent residents. The first lady herself was granted citizenship in 2006.

While the President never mentions Saipov, who obtained his green card through the equally maligned diversity lottery, he has been known to detail the attack.

The Knavs were sworn in as US citizens on Thursday in Lower Manhattan, The New York Times reported.

The US allows a number of ways for US citizens and legal permanent residents to sponsor family members to come to the US permanently, including categories for parents, adult siblings and adult children, married and unmarried.

The couple met in Sevnica, Slovenia in 1966, and Melania was born in the same town. Viktor was a auto dealer.

She settled in NY in 1996 and met Mr Trump two years later.

Viktor, 74, is two years older than President Trump. Now, we're certain his shameless hypocrisy sees no boundaries.
