California's Carr Fire Was Bad. The Mendocino Complex Fire Is Worse

President Donald Trump is claiming that California's water policy is shortchanging firefighters of water to battle the state's raging wildfires. They are now deployed in California, Oregon, and Washington. They'll go at it directly with water and retardant where they can.

Nearly 3,000 firefighters are fighting the Mendocino Complex Fire, including crews from Arizona, Washington and Alaska. There they'll wait for the blaze to come to them while lighting "backfires" to clear vegetation between the fire line and the approaching blaze. The fire sent up an enormous pillar of smoke and ash.

The Mendocino Complex blaze has become California's biggest ever fire.

Seventeen wildfires are burning up and down California.

Environmental activists and some politicians say the intensity of the state's wildfire season could be linked in part to climate change.

The Ranch Fire, north of Clear Lake, over the last two days has spread five miles east, one to two miles north, and three miles south. Sunday it spread into the footprint of the Pawnee Fire that in June of this year burned 14,000 acres west and south of Indian Valley Reservoir north of Highway 20.

About two-thirds of the worldwide reinforcements in Redding were sent to the Mendocino Complex Fires, U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman Kerry Greene said, and the remaining third stayed nearby to fight the Carr Fire. The state's fire agency, CalFire, said it has not had problems accessing water.

About 177 of the clinic's 199 staff have continued to report to work, NorCal said last Friday. "That's the way it is".

Fire officials have condemned the presidents comments, saying that they are not in fact struggling to source enough water to contain the fires.

The Mendocino Complex Fire began a little more than a week ago with two neighboring fires burning through only 9,500 acres of land, then rapidly spreading - at one point, by almost 30,000 acres within hours.
