Cardillo has since tweeted more than a few times about Ocasio-Cortez, saying he believes that she'll fail in Congress and that, despite his incorrect mention of where she went to school, he still believes she's "not a 'girl from the Bronx.'".

Progressive political newcomer Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez slammed a conservative TV host on Sunday after her suggested the Democratic congressional candidate for NY lied about where she came from.

While the Post's article is essentially a non-story, it hasn't stopped conservative Twitter personalities from using it as an attempt to smear the new congressional candidate over her Democratic socialist credentials.

But Ocasio-Cortez said the label of democratic socialism did not represent her fully. Ocasio-Cortez's platform was primarily based on her ability to relate to the working class citizens as she and her family belong to that community.

"Hey John, 1. I didn't go to Brown or the Ivy League".

In a tweet on Sunday, Cardillo claimed that the photo of her home was "a far cry from the Bronx hood upbringing she's selling".

Given that no African team qualified either, it means they are still in position to reclaim their status as lovable underdogs. Now Japan stand in the path of another appearance in the quarter-finals, where Brazil or Mexico will lie in wait.

According to the New York Times, it's true Ocasio-Cortez was born into the doldrums of the Bronx. In fact, her campaign website clearly mentions that she moved to Yorktown Heights from the Bronx when she was five in order for her to receive a better education. "It is nice. Growing up, it was a good town for working people. I was born in a place where your Zip code determines your destiny".

Ocasio-Cortez points out that the focus on "identity" also discounts the hard work of her grassroots campaign.

"It's part of what I am", she said.

John Cardillo, in response to the fierce rebuttal, said that he stood corrected about Ocasio-Cortez's alma mater, but continued to insist that the NY Democratic candidate was not being wholly truthful about her past. "She embodied so much of what we wanted to accomplish".

"There are a lot of districts in this country that are like NY 14", Ocasio-Cortez said Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press". Breitbart's Josh Caplan is out with a "fact check" on the Democratic Socialist's background - only to find she grew up in one of the richest counties in the United States.
