I was new and I was dressed somewhat casually because we were just returning from a Puerto Rican celebration and my daughter was carrying a Puerto Rican flag.

Officer Patrick Connor, a10-year veteran, was scheduled to explain to his superiors today why he did nothing as a woman was berated by a belligerent man who was allegedly drunk, and cursed the woman for wearing the shirt, reports the Chicago Sun-Times.

Irizzary was seen asking nearby Cook County Forest Preserve Officer, Patrick Connor (right) for help, but he ignored her pleas and allowed Trybus to continue verbally abusing her.

Cook County President Toni Preckwinkle released a statement Thursday saying, "Under the leadership of General Superintendent Arnold Randall and his team, the Forest Preserves of Cook County have become a safe, welcoming place of exploration, recreation and leisure for everyone".

Mia Irizarry said she was celebrating her 24th birthday at Caldwell Woods park when the man approached her and asked her why she was wearing the sleeveless Puerto Rico flag shirt. The video shows the officer appearing not to move any closer to the pair or do anything to actively end the situation.

"He's very distraught and not happy about having to leave employment much sooner than he intended, but because of the strong reaction from the public and political figures, he thought it would be unrealistic to stay as an officer".

On Monday, Forest Preserves of Cook County, which administers the park, tweeted it was aware of the June 14 incident and video, and it had launched an investigation. Trybus was later charged with disorderly conduct and assault.

U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez of Chicago's 4th District called the incident a "racist, ugly, vicious attack", according to the Chicago Tribune.

But the video makes clear that we all have to step up to defend the United States from this tide of bullying, misogyny, homophobia, and xenophobia, and stand up for what America is really all about.

Nasatir, a former Cook County prosecutor, pointed out that under IL law, Trybus might be guilty of a hate crime if any of his actions were motivated by his bias against the victim, "From the statements (Trybus) made, and the language used, it's something that certainly should be seriously looked at to see if the hate crime enhancement is appropriate", he said.

Connor was put on desk duty immediately after the incident, but nothing more was done for nearly a month.

"As you can see the police are not even - he's not even grabbing him".

Several different versions of the video have appeared across social media, but they all show a man, later identified by authorities as Trybus, berating a woman.

The suspect continued to harangue Ms Irizarry for about 10 minutes before other officers arrived and arrested him.

On Twitter, he said: "We can not allow those who do not understand America's greatness to terrorize people due to their background. This is not the America we all believe in".
