In a bid to identify the illegal Bangladeshi migrants, the government on Monday released the second and final draft of Assam's National Register of Citizens (NRC), mandated by the Supreme Court.

"The National Register of Citizens (NRC) was initiated by the UPA under Manmohan Singh Ji to fulfil the commitment made in the Assam Accord of 1985".

People wait to check their names on the draft list at the National Register of Citizens (NRC) centre at a village in Nagaon district, Assam state, India, July 30, 2018.

Assam is the first Indian state where the NRC is being updated after 1951, with March 24, 1971, as the cut-off date, to include names of genuine Indian citizens. The home minister also said that there is "no question of any coercive action against anyone", while stressing the NRC process is "being carried out with complete fairness and transparency". We are anxious because people are being made refugees in their own country. - West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Is the Government trying to do forceful eviction? "Request Home Minister to bring an amendment", she remarked. The biggest challenge for India would be to deal with these people who will become stateless if their names do not make it to the final list.

A first draft published last December included only 19 million people as legal citizens.
