Diplomatic disconnect with North Korea spells trouble for Trump

President Donald Trump was accused of forcing the North Korea summit "for cheap headlines" by MSNBC host Joe Scarborough, who said POTUS had made himself "look like a fool".

Pompeo sought to dispel suggestions that the Trump administration has backed down from demanding the complete, verifiable and irreversible dismantlement of the North's nuclear weapons. But he maintained that progress is being made.

"The US still believes North Korea will denuclearize substantially before we give them any major rewards, while North Korea believes that the two need to move together jointly, and both make concessions".

"If those requests were gangster-like, the world is a gangster", Pompeo said, noting that numerous U.N. Security Council resolutions have demanded that the North rid itself of nuclear weapons and end its ballistic missile program. "We agreed to the denuclearization of North Korea".

The lawmaker's comments come one-day after North Korea criticized the US for their push for denuclearization.

The secretary of state is under pressure to deliver a more concrete disarmament plan after the two leaders signed a vague one and a half page document that didn't provide a timetable for dismantling North Korea's nuclear arsenal.

Daily NK reported the lectures are not having the desired effect, and its source said the North Koreans attending the lecture appeared disinterested or bored.

U.S. State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert tweeted that Pompeo spoke briefly before leaving Pyongyang.

"Just as was the case with Vietnam, repatriation of USA remains from the DPRK will be important not just to American families, but to building trust between the United States and North Korea as well", Pompeo said in a release provided by the State Department.

"We did have very serious discussions on very important matters yesterday", Kim said.

Pompeo left North Korea on Saturday humiliated and empty-handed. Kim ended Pompeo's visit on a positive note, telling the top USA diplomat just before he boarded his plane, "We will produce an outcome, results".

The administration worked for months to win China's support for its "maximum pressure" campaign of sanctions to isolate North Korea, which does most of its global trade with the Chinese. "The statements that were put out, Chairman Kim's statement following our discussions, continued to express his desire to complete the denuclearization to which he is so committed", Pompeo said.

"I see China's hands all over this", said Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, saying he thought the Chinese were "pulling back" North Korea because of the U.S.

State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert said there was never an expectation that Pompeo would meet with Kim, although other US government officials previously indicated that was the plan. The censure was a stark contrast to the Pompeo's description of the talks as "productive".

Pompeo, who is now in Tokyo, is expected to meet with Japanese and South Korean counterparts to brief them on his visit.

Mr. Pompeo said he spent "a good deal of time" discussing a denuclearisation timeline and the declaration of the North's nuclear and missile facilities.

"The United States, Republic of Korea and Japan continue to strengthen our trilateral cooperation to achieve the goal set out in Singapore", Pompeo said.

Officials from the two sides would meet next week in Panmunjom, on the border between the two Koreas, to discuss the return of the remains of roughly 7,000 US soldiers missing since the 1950-1953 Korean War.
