Sweden's 3-0 victory over Mexico ensured Germany finished bottom of Group F and were eliminated in the opening round of a World Cup for the first time since 1938.

LA Galaxy employee Adam Serrano shared a number of clips of Mexico fans reacting to the result of the South Korea-Germany match to Twitter on June 27.

Four of the last five winners of the previous tournament have now crashed out in the group stage the next time around.

Leaving aside Uruguay - who won the inaugural World Cup in 1930 before not travelling to Italy for the 1934 edition - it is the sixth time in the history of the competition that the reigning champions have failed to make it past the first hurdle.

"For us it's a huge disappointment". The final two matches of Group F in Russia's World Cup had come to their conclusions and once again the holders of the title were on an early flight home.

"We believe there will be a transition that will take place after the World Cup, regardless of the outcome of the tournament, and no one is better equipped to handle that than Jogi Loew".

With the group going down to the wire, Germany needed victory against the lightly regarded Koreans to give themselves a chance of progressing.

Apple, Samsung End Years-Long Battle Over Copied iPhone Design

"Where we go from here, we'll have to talk about it calmly". Mexico, however, will also advance despite the heavy loss, thanks to South Korea. Initially flagged offside, the goal was finally allowed after a VAR review.

"I thought we could use that as a reverse strategy and that has really hit the nail on the head".

From 30 yards out, it should have been fodder for World Cup-winning goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, but after fumbling Jung's dipping drive Neuer scrambled desperately to clear as Son raced to pounce. The entire German nation - all of us - have lost.

"Germany are the defending champions and No. 1 in the Federation Internationale de Football Association ranking, so I thought about what mistakes Germany might make, because they probably felt they would be able to beat us - that's what everybody thought", South Korea manager Shin Tae-yong told reporters.

Four minutes later, Son Heung-Min doubled the score on a counter attack, putting the ball in the wide open goal.

Timo Werner, Marco Reus, Mesut Ozil and second-half substitute Mario Gomez were among the Germany stars who failed to take goal scoring chances as the South Koreans defended with determination. Loew said he had not yet reflected on the future.

The Germans even have a word for it: schadenfreude, the feeling of joy caused by the suffering or humiliation of another person; and it was in plentiful supply once the final whistle blew on their disastrous World Cup campaign.
