Mr Moonves acknowledged in a statement that there were times decades ago when he may have made some women uncomfortable by making advances. The alleged incidents spanned several decades, with the earliest of them reported to have taken place in during Moonves' early days as a television exec at Fox. "What it feels like to have someone hold you down-you can't breathe, you can't move", she said. Now he's engaged in a legal dispute with Shari Redstone, the controlling shareholder of CBS and Viacom.

According to Farrow, those claims include six women who say Moonves sexually harassed them between the 1980s and the 2000s. Here's what you should know about Moonves and his career.

But his wife, Julie Chen, whom he married in 2004 and who is the host of Big Brother on CBS, said she fully supported her husband.

"He has gotten away with it for decades", said writer Janet Jones, who claims Moonves forced his lips on her during a 1985 pitch meeting.

Farrow's article goes describe how such behavior permeated company-wide at CBS, detailing several instances in which allegations were covered up; accused male employees were promoted; and female employees received hush settlements. "Along with that team, we will continue to focus on creating value for our shareowners", the statement continues. "He has always been a kind, decent and moral human being", she said on Twitter.

Moonves, she said, followed her to the door and blocked her path. "All allegations of personal misconduct are to be taken seriously", CBS said yesterday.

Moonves is now caught up in a fight for control over CBS with Shari Redstone, the majority shareholder of CBS and Viacom who wants to merge the two companies, a move Moonves is resisting.

He joined CBS in 1995 from Warner Bros.

CBS also read a statement by Redstone denying the allegations have anything to do with a boardroom battle before reading a statement from Moonves admitting he's made "mistakes". "Toward the end of my time there, I thought, God, I love the stories, I love the work, but this has to be easier somewhere else".

Shares in CBS tumbled when the reports of the misconduct allegations began to circulate around noon Friday, as investors anxious that Moonves might be forced to step down.

"Ms. Redstone hopes that the investigation of these allegations is thorough, open and transparent", the company said. CNN has not independently confirmed the allegations.

CBSi and Entertainment Tonight are both owned by CBS.
