In Michigan, Trump also directed his ire at another Democratic senator, Jon Tester of Montana, over his role in the failed nomination of White House doctor Ronny Jackson to run the Department of Veterans Affairs. And MSNBC's Mika Brzezinski, who endured a little roughing up by Wolf, too, said she felt sorry for Sanders as a "wife and mother".

Conservatives, in particular, are offended by Wolf's speech. "I think she's very resourceful", she said.

Wolf's comments about Huckabee Sanders were not well received by members of the administration who did opt to attend the dinner, with the press secretary herself standing just feet away from the comedian during the performance.

It's out of bounds to mock how Sarah Sanders' looks and call her an "Uncle Tom" for women, to advocate for Kellyanne Conway to be pinned under a tree and to compare the contributions of Ivanka Trump to that of an empty box of tampons. After one crass joke drew groans in the Washington Hilton ballroom, she laughed and said, "Yeah, shoulda done more research before you got me to do this". "She burns facts, and then she uses the ash to create a flawless smoky eye". Like, maybe she's born with it; maybe it's lies.

The "winners", so to speak, might be Wolf and President Trump. CNN's Chris Cillizza said Wolf was bullying Sanders.

If Wolf's detractors really cared about journalism, they would be far less concerned about Sarah Huckabee Sanders' feelings and more alarmed by the antics of the burgeoning fascists for whom she serves as a mouthpiece.

This revisionism is frustrating. "You know? A press briefing, a bunch of lies or divided into softball teams".

That American citizens were so afraid of losing even an inch of their privilege that they hid their sexism and racism behind economic anxieties and a vote for Trump.

"I asked @maggieNYT to quote the line where Michelle intensely criticized SHS's appearance". They support white supremacists.

Trump calls the press "the enemy of the people", words dictators use before shutting down a free press.

In the last week, the comedian Catherine Deveny has fielded thousands of death and rape threats online simply because she said some things about ANZAC day that people found offensive.

Second, because of the propensity of this administration to lie about easily ascertained facts and events in the works, virtually every utterance from an administration figure should be couched as "the White House claimed" or "the White House argued". Their supporters jeered that "it's not illegal to knock on someone's door!" They call Mexicans rapists. Is it Sarah Sanders, is it Sarah Huckabee Sanders, is it Cousin Huckabee, is it Aunt Huckabee Sanders?

This extends beyond the public though.

Peter Baker of the New York Times, which pointedly does not participate in the dinner, tweeted afterward, "Unfortunately, I don't think we advanced the cause of journalism tonight". They do it almost every time they open their mouths.

But there are a lot of people rising to Wolf's defense, too.

As the tumult over Wolf's jokes mushroomed, Margaret Talev, a Bloomberg News White House correspondent who contracted Wolf for the dinner, issued a White House Correspondents' Association statement.
