Senate Approves Overturning FCC's Net Neutrality Repeal

Wednesday's vote also saw some of Cruz's Republican colleagues side with the over 80 percent of Americans who want to see the Obama-era protections preserved, including Sens.

The repeal effort led by Senate Democrats faces a significant hurdle in the House and an even greater one in the White House, but Democrats hope to rally support from young voters as they head to the ballot box in the 2018 midterm elections.

Today, Cantwell and Washington's other US Senator, Patty Murray, joined all the Senate Democrats and three Republicans in moving to repeal a Trump-era decision from the Federal Communications Commission that will dismantle net neutrality as we know it. But Trump-appointed FCC Commissioner Ajit Pai vowed to overturn it anyway, and in December the board voted to end net neutrality on June 11. The FCC said in repealing it last December that it was simply restoring the "light-touch framework" that has governed the internet for most of its existence.

The FCC voted 3-2 to roll back numerous existing net neutrality rules, including those prohibiting internet service providers from blocking or throttling of content, or from selling so-called "fast lanes" for speedier access to consumers.

The vote is obviously good news for net neutrality proponents, but it's also just the first step, and the next will be much more hard.
