Now the city has woken up to a gloomy Monday of booming thunder and even more rain. Developmental chances stand near 30% over the next two days and 40% over the next five days.

If it does become a named storm, it will be the 4th year in a row that the first name storm of the season occurred before June 1.

The Gulf has never had a hurricane during the month of May, but the three hurricanes that have formed in May have all been off the Jacksonville coast.

There is a weak disturbance in the southeastern Gulf of Mexico. This system could acquire tropical or sub-tropical characteristics over the next several days as it slowly moves northward to the Florida/Alabama border. We'll likely make up that deficit quickly as we could see between 3-5 inches of rainfall by late in the weekend! Clouds are streaming up off this area of low pressure over our heads but we should manage to see some sunshine peering through this morning.

"If the system impacts north Florida it could bring a lot of rain over the peninsula but also to southeast Alabama".

"The main threat we're going to have from this system is localized flooding", she said.
