Excitement builds as first 'US Embassy' road signs go up in Jerusalem

In March Guatemala's president, Jimmy Morales, said that his country would move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem on May 16, two days after the us move.

Trump announced the move in December 2017, saying he was making good on U.S. legislation and presidential pledges, dating back decades, to support Israel's designation of Jerusalem as its capital.

The global community considers the annexation illegal and considers east Jerusalem as occupied territory.

The Palestinian authorities have called on the diplomatic corps, worldwide non-governmental organizations and religious authorities to boycott the opening of the USA embassy in Jerusalem.

In June 2017, however, like his predecessors, Trump signed a six-month waiver to delay the relocation, which would have complicated United States efforts to resume the long-stalled Israeli-Palestinian peace talks.

According to a White House statement, the opening ceremony will be on May 14.

The status of Jerusalem is among the most contentious in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

"We're still waiting to see if the U.S. president will come here for the opening move".

Trump's former Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, announced last year that constructing a new embassy in Jerusalem would take years, and probably won't be done within Trump's first term in office. Half of Jerusalem was occupied and annexed by Israel following the 1967 War. Israel has made repeated offers of a two-state solution, once even offering to internationalize Jerusalem, but the Palestinians rejected them. The Palestinians, however, see East Jerusalem as the capital of their future state. No country now has its embassy in Jerusalem, instead keeping them in the Israeli commercial capital Tel Aviv.

Israel has expressed hopes that other countries will follow suit, though the move was widely condemned in the global community.
