Ros-Lehtinen, who is retiring from Congress this year, echoed Curbelo. "When scandals and distractions overtake a public servant's ability to function effectively, another person should fill that role".

A poll commissioned by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and released Tuesday shows Curbelo with a narrow 45-40 lead over Democrat Debbie Mucarsel-Powell.

While both are Republicans, the two Florida lawmakers have previously broken with the Trump administration for their handling of climate change issues, and Ros-Lehtinen criticized Pruitt's handling of climate change over the past year.

Curbelo's comments about Pruitt, one day after the EPA unveiled the administration's plan to roll back Obama-era vehicle emissions rules, demonstrates how quickly the latest accusations of corruption against the administrator have spun out of control. In the last 24 hours alone, more information has come to light about a Capitol Hill apartment he rented for just $50 a night, including revelations that it was used for GOP fundraisers and is linked to an energy lobbyist whose firm represented a company that received EPA sign-off on a pipeline project. The unconventional lease terms permitted Pruitt to pay $50 only on days his bedroom in the unit was actually occupied - with a total of $6,100 in payments over a roughly six-month period a year ago.

The EPA announcement comes as Pruitt faces a series of ethics questions.

Curbelo did not return a request for an interview on Tuesday afternoon.

"Any attempt to draw that link is patently false", Mr Pruitt's spokesman said in a statement.

The ethics memo stated that the lease authorized the use of the condo by Pruitt and his immediate family, including his daughter McKenna Pruitt who stayed in a second bedroom during a White House internship. It is already probing Pruitt's outsized 2017 travel spending, which included extensive use of bodyguards and frequent use of first-class airline tickets. Congress must step up and fire Pruitt.

"No one in America is eager to buy a vehicle that gets worse gas mileage and spews more pollution from its tailpipe", said Fred Krupp, president of the Environmental Defense Fund.

"I don't know how you survive this one", former New Jersey governor and ABC News contributor Chris Christie told ABC News Chief Anchor George Stephanopoulos on "This Week" Sunday. That message was reinforced by White House Chief of Staff John Kelly in a telephone call to Pruitt on Tuesday morning.

"I hope he's going to be great", Trump told reporters, declining to reiterate publicly his private praise for Pruitt's work.

"It is long past time for Scott Pruitt's tenure to end". Not only has Scott Pruitt racked up hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars in luxe travel charges because apparently coach is "politically toxic", but the E.P.A. administrator is also systematically undermining the core mission of his agency, which is largely to prevent Americans from treating the Earth like a porta-potty.

"Many agencies - including the White House - have refused to provide the information that our Committee has requested to conduct our investigation, and without subpoenas, we can not effectively investigate this matter", the letter said.
