The president previously sided with Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and other neighbors that had accused Qatar of spreading extremism, fomenting regional unrest and allowing funds to flow to terror groups.

Qatar has hired Donald Trump-connected Ballard Partners for counsel and assistance related to its outreach to government officials and business/NGO executives in Washington and Florida, the site of the president's winter White House.

The two sides also affirmed their shared commitment to continued security cooperation, as the United States announced to sell Qatar Advanced Precision Kill Weapon Systems (APKWS) for an estimated cost of 300 million US dollars also on Monday.

The pair also "discussed obstacles to restoring unity in the Gulf Cooperation Council", the statement added, a clear reference to the diplomatic feud between Qatar and Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said last week that Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani will be meeting with Trump on April 10.
